6 Nations Predictor - The Result

I can announce C T Barkby was the only person to correctly guess the winner of 14 from 15 matches correctly! With only the Italian win over France stopping the Grand Slam of 15 from 15.

I would also like tothank C T Barkby that despite being English he backed Scotland to win against Italy!! This made him the front runner. 2nd and 3rd place was fought out by 5 others who had predicted 13 from 15 matches.

The tiebreaker separated them with Paul Boulton taking 2nd and Nasl Darwisl taking 3rd place.

The wooden spoon position for this predictor goes to Brian Mohr as he only predicted 2 from 15 matches correctly.

Thank you to all who took part, there was some exciting rugby played over the 6 Nations Tournament. Italy, for the 1st time ever, beat France. Scotland avoided the wooden spoon with a strong final match. England just missed out on the Grand slam by some outstanding play by Ireland.

Until next year, thanks again.

Juniors @ Marr College

Jets Juniors travelled through to Troon to take on Marr College and South Ayrshire on a very wet Sunday morning.  The team welcomed back coach Martyn Johnstone from extended sick leave for these matches.

The team took on South Ayrshire in their first match.  With South Ayrshire receiving a bit of a going over from Marr in the first match, the team were looking to battle back and did just that in the 1st set against the Jets team.  Coach Johnstone then took a time out to settle the teams nerves and to refocus the team on their goals for the match and the team responded immediately with some excellent serving from Maia and Klaudia.  The set was won 25-17.  Set 2 was the most unbelievable thing to happen to any Jets side.  The team were cruising right from the first point and served South Ayrshire off the court.  The ayrshire side had no response to Jets service and Jets won the set 25-3.  The 3rd set was a formality and the team took a very commanding 8-0 lead at the turn.  The team then closed the set out 15-2.

This was a very good performance from the team with some excellent serving and good side out unit.

The 2nd match was against Marr College A.  From the warm up the Marr girls were up for this.  And it didnt stop when the game started.  Marr raced into a strong lead and the inexperience of the Jets side showed.  Marr showed the girls the way volleyball should be played.  The 2nd set the Jets girls were still hurting from the 1st set defeat and this continued throughout the set.  Marr showed some excellent system play and good setting to allow the outside spikers to score at will.
The 3rd set was different.  Jets knew they had lost the match and played with a sense of freedom.  They played competitvely and aggressively and were excellent until the last part of the set with a 12-10 lead.  Marrs strongest server stepped up to the service line and put in 2 unreturnable serves and 3 aces.  The team lost 15-12 but they got themselves in to a good position which was a positive.  Also, this was the set the team started to play a new system so not only were they up against a very good Marr side who practice alot more than they do, they also had to contain with alot of stress from a new system.

The girls were exemplory at these matches and are looking very strong for Playoffs this season.  With more hardwork in training, this team can challenge Marr at the end of the season.

Jets Juniors Aim High with the Royal Air Force

Jets Juniors Aim High with the Royal Air Force

Jets Volleyball Club has announced a sponsorship deal with the Royal Air Force to support the newly formed junior programme.

Flight Lieutenant Jim Thompson and Martyn Johnstone agreed a partnership with the RAF providing a full set of strips for the Under 16 Girls Junior National League team for their inaugural season in the Scottish League.

Martyn comments ‘This is a really big opportunity for Jets Volleyball Club to promote Junior Volleyball in Scotland and to give kids from the West of Edinburgh the opportunity to play Volleyball.  In conjunction with the RAF we have also managed to secure funding from Cash for Clubs to allow these kids to continue in their volleyball development.  This season is a big step for Jets Volleyball Club with it being the first season ever we have produced a Junior Team.  Some of the players we have playing for us are very talented and we have already produced one player who competed in the recent UK School Games in Newcastle’.

Jim Thompson from the RAF said ‘The RAF is really excited to be supporting the world of Volleyball in Edinburgh.  We already sponsor many youth activities in Scotland and we felt this was a good opportunity to assist a fledgling youth sporting programme.  I wish the team and the club every success this year’.

Jets Juniors will open up their Junior League campaign on Sunday 10th October at home with 2 matches against Team Lanarkshire and City of Edinburgh.  Details of the match times and venue will be available at www.jetsvolleyball.co.uk.

Park Volley - 17/7/10

On Saturday 17th July, Jets Volleyball Club held the first Park Volley Tournament of the summer of 2010.  It wasn’t looking hopeful in the morning as the Junior Session which was planned had to be called off due to the wet conditions.

Nether less, more than 35 competitors turned up to compete in strange weather.  4 courts were set up and everyone had registered and we were all set to play.

With the idea of the day to have as much game play as possible, matches were first team to 21 points so the games were fast and enjoyable.  Everyone played with a smile on their face but still managed to maintain the competitive spirit.

From the pools 4 teams progressed into the Cup Semi Finals with the other teams dropping into the plate competition.

The Cup Semi Finals were between He’s not with us Vs Nuvoc and Heriot Watt Vs Strap Me Up.

The matches were well contested with He’s not with us and Strap me Up progressing from the matches to the Final.

The plate competition was played in a lot of fun and good humour with the Plate Final being between Two Guys Fantasy and Harry Potter’s Goblet.  An exciting Plate Final took place with Harry Potter’s team coming away with the victory.

The final of the Cup was a see saw match with the lead changing place several times but Strap me Up showed some good determination in Defence to hold off the challenge from their opponents.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and really hope we can make the next one even bigger.

Success and Dispare at Finals Weekend

Jets VC competed in 2 finals at the Finals Weekend.

Men's 3 started off at blistering pace against their Division 2 opponents Su Ragazzi II.  They took a deserved 2-0 lead and were looking good to close out the match but went into freefall and Su came back with a bang.  Su managed to win the next 3 sets and take the title of Scottish Plate Champions.  Mens 3 gave a very good account of themselves.

Photos of the Final can be seen here

Grassmarket Jets 2 Su Ragazzi II 3

Men's 1 were taking on a youthful City of Edinurgh II side in the final of the Thistle Bowl.  The young boys from Edinburgh matched everything Jets did in the first set and took it with some excellent outside spiking by the team.
Jets regrouped and shifted the focus to Block.  The team performed heroics at the net with some outstanding blocking by the team to take the next 2 sets comfortably.  Jets again started the 4th set in good fashion but some lapses of concentration cost the team dear and let Edinburgh back into the match.  Edinburgh had opportunities to close out the set but the determination of the Jets team showed and an excellent spike from Paolo Puggioni on match point ensured that Jets lifted their first National Trophy in over 10 years.  A big thank you to Andy Thomson for guest coaching on the day.  Edinburgh II showed they have lots of potential and will be a force to be reckoned with in Division 2 next season.
