Scottish Cup Semi Final

Jets Womens 1 were up against Troon in the Cup Semi Final this Sunday.  With Troon winning both matches this season Jets had a tough task on their hands.

Jets started strongly and rallied very well with their opponents throughout the first set.  A lack of ball control and inability to put the ball on the ground cost the Jets team dear.  They lost the set 25-19.

The same pattern followed in the 2nd set and Troon won that very convincingly 25-12.

Jets came out of the blocks fast in the 3rd set and decided they were not gonna lose this easily.  They played some of the best volleyball this season and convincingly won the set 25-13.

The 4th set was due to be a battle but again Jets let their opponents have that advantage at the start of the set which meant they were always chasing the game.  Troon took this set and proceed to the final to play against Su Ragazzi who won 3-0 against a spirited North Grampian who contain an old Jets player Steph Cruickshank.

Jets are very disappointed but will need to pick themselves up for the playoff matches Vs City of Edinburgh next weekend.

Results - Sat 6th March

Today seen the last day of the season for a couple of the Jets teams.

First up was Polonia against Glasgow Mets II.  Poor passing and serving cost the team dear and lost 4-1.

Womens 1 were all ready to face Glasgow Mets but a phone call from the away team notified that the team won the match on forfeit 3-0.

Womens 2 were away to Troon in a daunting match.  After a shaky first 2 sets, the girls committed themselves very well and won the 3rd set 25-20 but narrowly lost the 4th set 25-23. A good way to finish the season for the girls and a highest finish ever of 5th is an excellent result for the season.

Mens 1 found out that Troon managed to scrape a set off Kilmarnock earlier on in the day so they knew their task was to win at least 1 set.  The match started slowly and quietly.  Mets took a lead into technical time out at 16-14.  Captain Johnstone had an attack of nerves but his team managed to reassure him and he went out and killed the next ball (setter i might add).  Mets were still in the match and were 24-22 up when Johnstone took a time out.  Jets came out and made a good side out followed by 2 excellent kill blocks.  Mets then came back with a side out but Jets block defense held strong and got themselves a set point.  After an exceptionally long rally, Nico Ricci tipped the ball down the line and the ball hit the line.  You have never seen a tea celebrate a set like the mens team did.  Jets tried to compose themselves but it look liked everyone was on a come down and Mets quickly won the next 3 sets without much competition.

Womens 3 were up against Troon II.  The troon side were determined to finish their season on a high and managed to win all 3 sets to win the match.  Jets came back and took the last 2 sets to give them some form of momentum into their semi final tomorrow.

All in all some excellent performances this season for some Jets teams and some unconsistent performances.

Next season will see new challenges with the Mens sides regrouping under a 3 team bracket as Polonia Jets have now called a time on their existence due to commitment issues.

Lets hope a head coach can come in and sort out the mens sides and have some focus like the womens sides have.

Jets Vs Fife

Last Night seen a match which Mens 1 had to take something from to preserve their status in division 1.

Jets came out all guns blazing and played some of their best volleyball of the year and took the set 25-15.  Fife came back at Jets and snuck the 2nd set 25-22 after Jets were 16-14 up at 2nd technical time out.

Jets then put the pressure back on Fife and some excellent blocking and attacking by Nico Ricci let them take the set 25-22.  Fife again wouldnt let up but Jets were pushing towards the victory and had 2 match points but an uncharacteristic error by Blake Hutchison meant Fife went on the ascendency.  Fife managed to take the set 28-26.

The 5th set was a real lottery, and Jets failure to control the ball meant they were always chasing Fife.  Fife managed to take the set 15-10.

This was a very good match and Michael Penny of Fife managed to hold it together for them and push them towards the victory.

Jets took 2 valuable sets but it was still an opprtunity missed.

Mens Teams Reach Finals

Jets Mens 1 and Mens 3 have made end of season finals over the past few days.

Mens 1 had a atricky tie in Dundee and after a very shaky start, some tactical switches allowed the team to win a tough match 3-1 and will compete in the final of the Thistle Bowl.

Mens 3 had a grudge match between Linlithgow Hornets.  Linlithgow prizes 5 of the Mens 3rd team squad from the National League.  Jets took a 2 set lead and looked very comfortable but Linlithgow were not giving up without a fight and won the next 2 sets.  The last set ended up a pot luck set but Jets managed to win this and have now qualified for the final of the Plate competition.

Womens 1 and Womens 3 will play in their Semi Finals this weekend against Troon and City of Edinburgh II retrospectively.

Good luck to both teams

Results - Sat 20/2

A disastrous start to this day with Broughton High School developing a leak in the sports hall meaning 3 matches were unable to be played.

Womens 2 were in action away to Glasgow Mets.  With W2 never beating Mets, this was going to be a tough task.  The girls bounced back very well from the manner of their defeat to NLVC on Thursday and blew Mets away at the start of the match.  They were 16-5 up after the 2nd technical time out.  Individual errors let Mets into the match but Jets managed to close set out 25-22.  The 2nd set followed the same pattern with the same scoreline.
The 3rd set was a complete role reversal.  Jets were down 16-4 at the technical time out but they were definitely not out of it.  Some excellent serving by Lenka, Carol, Renate and Patricia brought the team back into it and managed to come back and win the set 29-27.

This was a great win for the girls especially after the way they lost to bad refereeing on the Thursday Night.

Results - Sat 13th Feb

Saturday 13th February seen alot of important matches for Jets VC but the outcomes were very disappointing.

The only shining light was Womens trois beating Nuvoc Un for the 2nd time in the league this season and hampering their promotion chances.

Mens 1 were up very early for a match against Troon.  This was a very important match for both sides but Troon edged this match with some terrific defence and resiliance. Jets lost this 3-1.

Womens 1 started excellently against Troon but the superior serving and defence from Troon lead them to a 3-0 win.

Mens 3 only managed to get a team together on Friday evening to fulfil this fixture and didnt really perform against an experienced Nuvoc II side.  The team lost 3-2.

Womens 2 were in a playof fight against Su Ragazzi.  The team started very strong with some excellent blocking and serving from the team.  A lack of tactics and power on the outside really hurt the team and they fell down to a 3-0 loss.

Womens 3 were up against Nuvoc in the 3rd match these teams have played this year.  An excellent performance by the girls saw them win 3-1 in real time but 3-2 overall.  Some excellent setting and leadership by Lorraine Steel helped the team to a league double over their edinburgh counterparts.  Excellent victory for the girls and good to see them back to winning ways.

Results 23/1/10

Today saw 5 out of 6 Jets teams take part in various Cup Quarter Finals.

First up ws Women's 2 who were away to Su Ragazzi.  The team blew Su away in the first set and played some of the best volleyball they have ever played.  Inconsistency in serving and determination in defence cost the team dearly and the team then lost the next 3 sets but didnt go down without a fight.

Womens 3 played Linlithgow Hornet in Quarter Final of plate and managed to come away with a 3-2 victory which takes them into the semi final stage.

Mens 1 played rivals Troon in the Quarter Finals of the Thistle Bowl and started poorly but excellent defence, serving and blocking from Ronan pushed them ahead to win the set.  The next set was very good and the set was won 25-11.  The third set the team took the foot off the gas and allowed Troon to get back into it.  Jets then held their nerve and took the 4th set and a place in the Semi Final.

Women's 1 played local rivals Nuvoc.  Nuvoc came out all guns blazing from the service line but they soon lost any momentum and Jets managed to comfortably win the 3 sets to take them into the next round of the cup.

Men's 3 faced the long trip along the road to Troon II.  The guys struggled for a team but the team went through there and came back with a 3-0 win.

All in all a good day for Jets VC with 4 teams now into the Semi Final stages of their respective cups.

Saturday 9th Jan Results

The first games of 2010 were played yesterday at Broughton High School.

Women's 3 were first up against league leaders Lenzie.  This was a match which could have boosted the sides promotion chasing chances.  With a full squad available, this was set to be a close match and it didnt disappoint.

The teams challenged every point and played very hard.  The difference between the teams was the tough serving of Lenzie and the aggression during broken play.  With the sets scores so tight, Jets missed a great opportunity to beat Lenzie losing 3-2.

Set Scores (23-25, 22-25, 225-25, 25-22, 15-10)

Men's 3 started their 2010 with a comfortable victory over Troon II 5-0.  The game was very disjointed and didnt have any rhythm to it at all.  Troon turned up with 3 very young guys who by the 4th set started to impose themselves onto the match.  Alot of questons asked of the referee in this match, some decisions correct, some dubious but the result was never in doubt.

Polonia had to postpone their match with Kilmarnock II as 4 of their players were stuck in Poland due to the weather conditions.

Novotel Cup

The Novotel Cup is an annual invitational tournament, staged by the Luxembourg Volleyball Federation for both senior men and senior women.  The Head Coaches of the Scottish Teams were delighted to receive their invitations for the 2010 event, and quickly arranged the required increase in their practice schedules.

The venue for the event is the spectacular National Sporting and Culture Centre at d’Coque and the tournament  takes place over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of January.

Head Coach for the senior women, John French relishes the chance to ‘lock horns’ with Austria, Latvia and Luxembourg.  International play is about winning of course, but it’s also about performing at the required level.  French points out that it has been a number of years since the National Teams played against higher level opposition and this year’s Novotel Cup therefore represents an opportunity to ‘bench mark’ the performances, and gain invaluable information into the performance level of the current Scottish team, as well as engage in the fight for the win!

The Luxembourg Federation will recognise and celebrate the memory of Denitza Krivova at the event by presenting a commemorative trophy to the most valuable young player of the tournament.  Denitza played for Luxembourg at both junior and senior levels, before she tragically died in a car accident in April 2008.

2 Jets Teams Progress in Scottish Cup

Yesterday saw the Two Division 1 Jets Women's sides progress into the Last 8 of the Scottish Cup.

W1 beat Glasgow Mets 3-1 away from home.  Another sluggish win against an understrength Mets side meant qualification into the last 8 which was the main aim.

W2 had a horror week.  Lots of calls offs meant only 6 players were making the trip to play potential banana skin Glasgow International.  This meant a hitting slot for normal libero Zoe Sell and a chance to become starting setter for Autumn Childs.  With only 2 of the 6 playing in their normal roles it was going to be a whirlwind match.  The match started well for Jets but then disaster struck.  Lenka went over on her ankle which meant a change in tactics for the team of 5.  They managed to come through this match after winning 3-1 so well done goes to the girls.

M1 faced an understrength Bon Accord side.  After some awful performances in previous weeks, the guys took it back to basics in training this week.  This seemed to work as the guys showed some signs of promise in this match.  They went down 3-1 but the performance in side out in the 3rd set was very encouraging for the team.
The guys now go into the Thistle Bowl and are looking to establish themselves in this competition with fellow Division 1 strugglers Troon and Division 2 2nd place team Dundee.

4th Round

This weekend, 4 of the Jets teams are in action in the 4th round of the Cup and Plate.

With 3 of the teams receiving tricky away ties, its going to be a hard slog for the teams to make the Quarter Finals.

Women's 1 face the team they defeated 3-1 last week in Glasgow Mets.  They will not be taking this game lightly this time and will be going out to show they are a stronger side than the one who played last week.

Gorbals Sports Cente - FBS 10.30am

Women's 2 face a very tricky tie against Glasgow International.  This side have been putting some impressive performances together in Division 2 but hopefully Jets will be able to use the experience and height to their advantage in this potential banana skin.

Coltness High School - FBS 10.30am

Men's 1 face off against Bon Accord in the 4th Round of the Cup.  With Jets having a torrid time in last few weeks, they can only pray for a miracle cure to the performances they have been giving.  Will Bon Accord get stuck on motorway?  Lets hope so....

Broughton High School - FBS 2.30pm

Polonia Jets have foreited the match against Nuvoc as they only have 2 players available for the match as most of the guys have decided to go home early for Xmas.
